NASA's New Horizons spacecraft enroute to Pluto passed a significant milestone by taking the first picture of Pluto and its' Texas sized moon Charon using one of the onboard instruments.
While it may not look like much, it was taken at a distance of over half a billion miles! The picture cleanly separates the two bodies and will only get better over time. New Horizons has been in space since its launch on January 19, 2006.
The spacecraft is due to fly by Pluto at closest approach on July 14, 2015, still 2 years away.
I look forward to seeing the ever better pics!
