Hey, Space Placers!
NASA just announced via Twitter that an American crew will launch from Pad 39-A Kennedy Space Center using a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft and Falcon 9 rocket on May 27, 2020.
Get more details here.
This is a huge step for NASA, SpaceX, America and humanity in the human exploration of space. No longer will the Russians be the only nation to have crewed access to space. Ever since the space shuttle program concluded in 2011 the Russians had the only ticket to space for crews. If the SpaceX mission is successful, that will no longer be the case.
Boeing will be re-flying their Boeing CST-100 Starliner uncrewed to the International Space Station later this year. If that mission is successful then Boeing will be very close to sending a crew into space so America will have another human rated platform.
NASA's Orion spacecraft and SLS rocket will be the final and most capable human rated platform to come on line, probably in 2021-2022.
