DART CHANGES ASTEROID ORBIT

 Hey, Space Placers!!!

This imagery from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope from Oct. 8, 2022, shows the debris blasted from the surface of Dimorphos 285 hours after the asteroid was intentionally impacted by NASA’s DART spacecraft on Sept. 26.

The shape of that tail has changed over time. Scientists are continuing to study this material and how it moves in space, in order to better understand the asteroid.

The DART mission impact changed the orbit of its asteroid moon target by 32 MINUTES - WOW!!!

NASA'S criteria for a successful impact was a change of 73 SECONDS OR MORE so DART beat that by more than 25 times!!!!!

This result will factor into the overall assessment of how viable this approach is for planetary defense against a detected impact threat to Earth.

ESA's Hera mission will provide a far more complete analysis of the impact's effectiveness as it will study the asteroid system.

Looking forward to learning more about DART's results.
