The intrepid Gaia spacecraft that has been mapping our home galaxy with exquisite precision for years has discovered a new family of black holes.
The first two were discovered through their gravitational effect on stars located near the black holes that causes them to wobble. Gaia detracted this wobble and follow up observations determined that only a black hole could be causing this wobble.
The black holes are the closest ones currently known to our solar system.
